Providing Care for Transgender Persons and their Families
Building on the Canadian Patient Safety Week theme of Communication, please join us for a panel presentation, immediately following the AGM, on the topic of providing care for transgender persons and their families. This presentation, led by Brandy Pollard, Ashley Smith and Fiona Smith, promises to be provocative and interactive. In their words, “people often don’t want to talk about this because they fear we might be offended…..we dare you to try to offend us.” Education is where it begins.
Brandy is a member of the WRHA Patient and Family Advisory Council and is very open and honest about being a mature transgender woman.
Ashley is a registered psychiatric nurse who works at the Trans Health Program at Klinic Community Health Centre as well as the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Program at the Health Sciences Centre.
Fiona is a faculty member in the psychiatric nursing program at Brandon University. She is completing a PhD in Applied Health Sciences at the University of Manitoba. Her research explores nursing students’ knowledge, attitudes and behaviors regarding transgender persons.
